An appointment makes sure your pet is treated in a timely way. Drop-in clients are seen as time allows, but often that just isn't possible. We do our very best to see patients with appointments as soon as possible; because of emergencies, even clients with appointments may sometimes need to wait a little. - Can I buy pet food and supplies here? Yes. We sell specialized pet foods made for the medical needs of patients with digestive issues, plus hypoallergenic shampoos, flea treatments and other medical supplies. You can also order from our online store and pharmacy. - How can I pay? We generally expect payment at the time of service. We accept personal checks with proper identification, and Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. - Do you take pet health insurance? We don't bill pet insurance companies directly, but we make sure you get the paperwork you need to file your claim. We don't recommend a particular insurer. Emergency treatment can be expensive, so a high-deductible policy can be a sensible way to make sure you can always afford the care your pet needs. - How can I tell if my pet is sick? In most cases, a big change in behavior, or a marked increase or decrease in appetite or water drinking, means your pet should see a doctor. Pets have much smaller bodies than we do and can't tell us how they feel. - What should I do if I think my pet was poisoned? Call us right away, or after hours call the Salem Veterinary Emergency Clinic at (503) 588-8082. In cases of poisoning, time means everything. Signs can include drooling, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, seizures, irritation of the skin or mouth, and unconsciousness. Many garden plants are dangerous: even small amounts of rhododendron, azalea, oleander, lily or yew can be harmful or fatal to dogs and cats. - Can I call the doctor for advice? As time allows, Dr. Helwig is always glad to talk with clients on the phone about general questions about their pet's health. Some questions are hard to answer without seeing your pet, so she may ask you to bring them in. - My schedule is tight. Can I drop my pet off on the way to work? Yes. Drop-off appointments are a convenient way to get your pet the care they need while you're somewhere else. When you can, it's still best to be there so you can answer questions, hear the instructions and reassure your pet in an unfamiliar place. - What if my pet has an accident? Call us at (503) 362-5233 immediately; we may ask you to bring your pet in right then. If you call after hours, the recording tells you how to reach the Salem Veterinary Emergency Clinic.
